"Eating Japanese Heritage?!"
The Energy Source for Workers: "TANTETSUKO Meals"

Introducing the "Tantetsuko Meal" recommended by Ms. Mami Uemura, a Hokkaido Assembly Member who loves Hokkaido and Sorachi, and hails from Akabira City! The "Tantetsuko Meal" is available for breakfast and lunch at the BAR & GRILL Splish in SAPPORO STREAM HOTEL.

Since the Meiji era, Japan's rapid modernization was supported by Hokkaido's coal, steel, ports, and the railway network that connected them. The food culture that became the source of nutrition for the workers, who were the protagonists of these stories called "Tantetsuko," involving coal ("Tan"), steel and railways ("Tetsu"), and ports ("Ko"), has created unique dishes in each region and continues to breathe life into the lives of people today. We introduce the "Tantetsuko Meal," still loved by the people of Hokkaido.

Ashibetsu Gatatan

Coal mines owned by zaibatsu such as Mitsui and Mitsubishi were active in Ashibetsu. In its heyday, the town was very active. "Gatatan" is a local dish that has been loved by people since those days. The roots of this dish can be traced back to the Chinese home-style dish "Gongtatang". It is basically a thick broth made from pork or chicken bones, with more than 10 ingredients including Chinese cabbage, carrots, onions, pork, shrimp, scallops, and shiitake mushrooms, and a beaten egg dropped into the broth. It is hearty, thick, hot, and tender, with a rich, nourishing flavor. It can be arranged in a variety of ways, such as gatatan ramen or fried rice, and is a popular local gourmet dish in Hokkaido.
