"Eating Japanese Heritage?!"
The Energy Source for Workers: "TANTETSUKO Meals"

Introducing the "Tantetsuko Meal" recommended by Ms. Mami Uemura, a Hokkaido Assembly Member who loves Hokkaido and Sorachi, and hails from Akabira City! The "Tantetsuko Meal" is available for breakfast and lunch at the BAR & GRILL Splish in SAPPORO STREAM HOTEL.

Since the Meiji era, Japan's rapid modernization was supported by Hokkaido's coal, steel, ports, and the railway network that connected them. The food culture that became the source of nutrition for the workers, who were the protagonists of these stories called "Tantetsuko," involving coal ("Tan"), steel and railways ("Tetsu"), and ports ("Ko"), has created unique dishes in each region and continues to breathe life into the lives of people today. We introduce the "Tantetsuko Meal," still loved by the people of Hokkaido.

Otaru Ankake Yakisoba

In fact, the first railway laid in Hokkaido was the Horonai Railway connecting Sorachi and Otaru, which was laid to transport coal. It was the third railroad to be opened in Japan. Otaru developed as a port city and was crowded with many workers. Under such circumstances, the popular dish that warmed the body and was hearty was ankake yakisoba (fried noodles with starchy sauce). It has become the soul food of Otaru residents and is very popular among tourists as well. Enjoy the different flavors that the chefs at each restaurant have devised!
